What Is Your Creative Outlet?
By Alison Ramsay
"The energy born of love is creative – it makes everything it touches new. To see how passionate you are, look around at what you have created". Deepak Chopra
Creativity can sometimes be thought of as this special gift only a few possess. Perhaps you are a person who has been rewarded for your creative expression throughout life… or maybe you are someone who laughed out loud at themselves during art class and shied away from self-expression - preferring to stand at the sidelines, and out of the spotlight. Either way, you are creative. Yup. Creativity is simply the use of the imagination to create things. These things can be beautiful works of art, but they can also be veggie gardens, flower arrangements, online marketing layouts, beautiful, healthful food, journalling, blog posts, happy children, or seamless schedules.
The key to discovering your natural creative abilities, is tuning into *yourself*. We are all creatives, we just express it in ways which are totally unique to us - authentic to us. The key to discovering that creative urge, is to look where you feel very drawn… even if you haven’t done it before! It will be something that tugs at your heart, whether you’re watching someone else do it in a movie, or you’ve carved out time for it already. It will be something that makes you well… you.
Set aside a good amount of time for quiet space. Use this time without distractions to tune into yourself. You can even meditate for a while. Then when you’re feeling relaxed and present, make a list of all the things (and maybe there is only one and that’s okay) that you’d love to do that you have not yet tried, or aren’t making time for. It doesn’t have to be oil painting or interpretive dance. What tugs at you? If you’re having a hard time coming up with things, think back to when you were a child. What did you want to be when you grew up? Who did you role play or aspire to become? Even now the people you follow and admire hold clues to possible hidden creative parts of yourself longing to come out to play.
Once you have your list, pick your top two things and brainstorm ways you can engage them. Is there a class nearby? Or somewhere you can volunteer? Do you have a friend doing something similar you can learn from or join with? Or if that feels too steep a step, you can even go see someone else doing it - like seeing a play or live music - the most important thing is that you are engaging that authentic creative urge that’s wanting some air time.
